Division 3 LG Newsletter #7

Centennial Tour Update
As Dr John & Debbie Button are wrapping up their Centennial Tour, one event just passed and one event is yet to come.

~ One Done
The first President of Kiwanis International was recognized in a wreath-laying ceremony at his commemorative plaque in Rutherford.  It was another great event with over 100 Kiwanians including Donald Johnston's grandson, the President and other members of the Detroit #1 Club and many from Division 3 & 4.  Many thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Ridgetown for hosting the event.  It was a very special occasion as you can see from the photos attached to this newsletter.

~ One Yet to Come
This is your last chance to get your tickets to the Centennial Celebration with John & Debbie. to be held September 26 in Ridgetown.  See the IMPORTANT DATES chart at the end of the newsletter for details on the event of the season.

The Power of One
Eliminate has surpassed one million dollars which makes the additional ten million seem within reach - although we all know that the initiative will need our attention until the goal is reached.  We continue to benefit from the Federal Government matching grant so each dollar raised through our continued efforts results in two dollars to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

The Seaway Club is welcoming back one member who left Kiwanis for a time but who has seen the light and will be re-joining next month.

Ward Burr from the Forest Club came up with an idea to have a loonie/toonie line at a children's day and with community contributions, raised over $150 for Eliminate (equaling over $300 with the Federal grant).  What a great idea with an amazing result thanks to one individual.

100th Anniversary of Kiwanis in Canada begins October 1 so we don't need to mourn the conclusion of the KI Centennial because we have one hundred years of our own to celebrate.

One Governor is set to finish a very successful year and as Serge Viau wraps up a very successful year, Allen Ure is already well into the planning for his year Serving the Children and all of us in EC&C.
EC&C Shirts
Please consider ordering a District shirt by going to the EC&C website and ordering online.  Our Michigan friends at the Rutherford event were very impressed with the District pride demonstrated by these bright shirts [and from someone who doesn't like to iron, they come highly recommended].

New Members
The Formula is alive and well.  Our Division has done a great job attracting new members this year and although we have sadly lost a few members this year, our count is at 33 new members inducted since October 1.  I anticipate that ALL of these people will remain faithful Kiwanians in 2015-16 and we will continue this upward swing over the next year to attract new members to our ranks.  People are attracted to our service projects and bring new ideas and energy to our clubs.

Participating in the induction of a new member is one of my favorite activities as LG and I am grateful when you arrange a time for me to come to your club to do this.  I feel, though, that we are not being consistent with our NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION.  Joining Kiwanis is an honour and a privilege but if we don't take the time to help our new members see the big picture of our global organization, they don't feel the connection to our Kiwanis world.  Because of that, I am proposing a different way of doing New Member Orientation and will talk about it at our Division Caucus Meeting (aka DCM) on September 19.  [It's no big secret - I'd like us to have two group orientations - one in Sarnia and one further south for all new members who have joined in the past year - but I haven't worked out details yet.  This would allow us to include the many people who have not heard the very excellent introduction available and also begins the connection of new members within the Division.]

Division Caucus Meeting - September 19
And speaking of the DCM...it's coming up very quickly.  We have MANY things to talk about, to do, to decide and to enjoy.  The agenda will be sent out before the meeting and I hope you'll encourage members to attend.  As you know, Division 2 Key Club Lieutenant Governor Shubhika Mahkul from Northern Secondary School in Sarnia will be joining us.  I will do a wrap up of the year and set the stage for another great year ahead "Serving the Children".  The most important part of the meeting will be hearing goals and club plans from each of the 2015-16 Presidents.

Prior to that meeting, please have committee chairs in place for Interclubs, Membership and Eliminate so we can add their names to our list of club leaders.

Special Events
The following page lists dates of events within the Division and if you have anything coming up that you would like shared, please let me know for inclusion in the next newsletter.  We all know the importance of interclubs and joining in divisional events so we can meet fellow Kiwanians and share pride in our clubs.  This is particularly important for new members as they learn more about what it means to progress from individual club member to Kiwanian.

Division 3 Lt. Governor's Newsletter #6

International Convention

I have returned from the International Convention in Indianapolis with renewed energy and enthusiasm for Kiwanis.  The International gathering always has a different feel to it than the District Convention but even more so this time when we celebrated the 100th Anniversary and looked ahead to our second millennium.  We were very proud Canadians as we watched Dr John Button lead thousands of Kiwanians through 3 days of fun, fellowship and service.  If you haven't yet watched some of the videos forwarded from KI, you should do so to see the spirit of the convention.  Another difference in the ICON is the participation of hundreds of Circle K, Key Club and Aktion Club members.  It changes the tone of the convention as they cheer, dance, sing and generally enjoy all aspects - and also participate in service projects throughout the week.

There was a lot of attention paid to The Formula and it is working!  One addition to the program this year was a TED-style session where clubs around the world shared their signature projects in a very quick, concise format.  Each hour we learned about 5-6 different ideas for service and then had an opportunity to talk to the presenters to learn more about the specifics.  This was a great format with hundreds of projects shared.  Many of these and other more in-depth sessions will be posted over the next few weeks on the Kiwanis.org website so check them out.

Another very interesting addition to the convention was the roll out of the Kiwanis Strategic Plan - aka "The I-Plan".  Service and programs in Kiwanis should be considered using the 4 I's - Impact, Image, Inspiration and Investment.  More information will be coming out but even at the outset, this makes so much sense and gives us a framework to evaluate, build and strengthen our clubs and projects.

EC&C Shirts
Thanks to the hard work of Trustee Sheila Donald, we wowed the convention floor with a yellow tsunami during the Business Session of the KI Convention.  Delegates of EC&C wore their new yellow shirts and we were a very visible presence during the election of officers and the voting on amendments to the by-laws.  It's not too late to order shirts (order form sent earlier - or an easier way is to go to the EC&C website and order online and they will be delivered to you).

Kudos to Clubs
Mayor Mike Bradley presented the Mayor’s Honour List awards to Seaway Kiwanians Ken Stothers, Devonna Stothers, Ken Machan, Lyn Colthart, Donna Kelso and Luke Winegard in recognition of their efforts on the Kenwick on the Lake restoration project.   The club donated $50 000 to this project which made it all possible. Funds donated were raised through TVCOGECO Seaway Kiwanis TVBingo.
The Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent held a very successful Open House with 80% of the membership in attendance to welcome 20 invited guests.  Potential new members were told what C-K members loved about Kiwanis, both globally and locally.  Participants commented on how positive everyone was as they shared information.  The Open House (following suggestions and templates from The Formula team) resulted in a new member already - with more expected - and community awareness was increased through word-of-mouth and media coverage.
In addition, KC CK has pledged to become a $100K club.  This is a combination of club fundraising and personal donations from members - 23 Walter Zeller Fellows (4 at the Diamond level) and 20 "Save 100 Families" donations.  This is great news for the Club and the Division.  Much of the success should be attributed to Eliminate Coordinator Mary Alice Marchand and we continue to thank her for her leadership.

If your club has an outstanding activity or honour you'd like to share, let me know so I can give you credit in the next newsletter.

Dates
I really hope you will consider coming to Chatham on July 18 to enjoy the 100th Anniversary Picnic in the Park with the members of the Chatham-Kent Club.  All are welcome and if you can borrow a child for a few hours, they will have loads of fun at the splash pad and playground.

There are many other up-coming events [some require notification to the contact person since food planning is required].  The biggest event in our area is the Centennial Celebration with John & Debbie.  I have tickets and will bring them to each of the events or you can contact the Guyitts in Ridgetown ($60 cash or make cheque out to "Kiwanis Club of Ridgetown").

Service
Looks like we are a bit heavy on the fun and fellowship goals of Kiwanis and a bit light on the service aspect over the next few months but I know that is not true.  Members are still organizing movies, strawberry socials and pancake breakfasts; still working hard to open the camps and animal farm so children can have a wonderful summer experience; still planning for up-coming events; and still working bingos - lots and lots of bingos.

Looking Ahead to Year's End
In all 7 clubs, the President Elects are planning for their term of office in 2015-16.  Whether returning or as a new President, the new year brings many opportunities to make a difference in your club and community.  At the District Caucus Meeting September 19, in-coming Presidents please come prepared to share your goals and plans.  In addition, we will be joined by Division 2 Key Club Lieutenant Governor Shubhika Mahkul from Northern Secondary School in Sarnia.  More information will come out in the fall but I wanted to give you advanced notice of the focus of this DCM.

Division 3 LG Newsletter 5

One Happy Island
Aruba promotes itself as "One Happy Island" and 335 registered Kiwanians and guests certainly experienced happy times at the 98th annual Eastern Canadian & Caribbean District Convention last week.  There were 244 clubs from 15 countries joined together to support Governor Serge Viau's goals to rejuvenate, eliminate and celebrate Kiwanis.  It was my pleasure to be in attendance to watch as Allen Ure from the Kiwanis Club of Ridgetown was elected Governor of EC&C for 2015-16 - a very proud moment for us in southwestern Ontario to see the Kiwanis International President Dr John Button (from the same Club) congratulate Governor Designate Allen.  The finale of the convention was the hand-off to the Hamilton Committee for the DCON May 12-15, 2016.

Phil Rossy from Eastern Ontario was elected Governor Elect and Bobby Moo Young from Jamaica is now the Vice Governor.  We will be guided by a very enthusiastic team over the next few years.

One Happy District
We are now able to order District shirts thanks to Trustee Sheila Donald and her committee who worked hard to come up with a colour (bright yellow) and design (long or short sleeves; women's or men's) at a reasonable price ($25 Cdn) that would be consistent throughout EC&C.  These are not intended to replace club shirts but rather to give us an alternative and to distinguish us at events such as the International Convention (Indianapolis, June 24-27, 2015 and Toronto, June 23-26, 2016).  The order form is attached (and was sent earlier this week in a separate email along with Sheila's outline describing order and delivery information).

One Happy Division
At the Convention in Aruba, we had 6 voting delegates from 3 clubs in the Division.  We were able to brag about the great things happening in southwestern Ontario and were well represented on the awards podium.

Trustee Sheila Donald received the "Coup de Chapeau Award" 'presented to a District Committee Chairperson based on outstanding work and contribution to the District'.  PLG Bud and Jackie Orr received the "Spirit of Service Award" 'to recognize a Kiwanian for enthusiastic dedication and outstanding service to the District'.  Both nominations were made by Past Governor Hope Markes.  In addition, PLG Bud Orr received a letter of citation from Past KI President Gunter Gasser for service in Building Bridges to the Future for Children.

One Happy Club
Congratulations to the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent for achieving the LG Award for the second quarter.  What sets this club apart from the rest is, in addition to all of the service projects, volunteer hours and interesting programs, they also make a commitment to Kiwanis education and to the Eliminate Project each quarter.

In addition, KC CK is very proud of its 23 Walter Zeller Fellows (4 at the Diamond level) and 16 "Save 100 Families" donations.  This is great news for the club, the Division and much of the success should be attributed to Eliminate Coordinator Mary Alice Marchand.  They have recently surpassed their goal to be a Gold Level Club.

One Happy Coordinator
Speaking of Mary Alice - she and I would like to thank you for your warm hospitality as we toured the District with the Eliminate update.  Even since we started our club visits a few weeks ago, things are changing and we are now over $81 million world-wide.  Division 3 is at 117% of its goal and almost 140% with the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada and Government matches.  That does not mean we can  stop our efforts, though.  As Dr Button said at the Convention, "We are not done until tetanus is done."

One Happy LG
The rejuvenation of the Division continues with a total of 27 new members (with an amazing 13 in Windsor and 5 each in Sarnia-Lambton Golden K and Chatham-Kent).  Sunshine Point Children's Camp is alive and well with a full summer of opportunities planned for campers thanks to the Bad Examples Riders Group, the new members of the Windsor Club and their hard work to achieve community support.

The Way Ahead
With all the happiness in this newsletter, we can't lose sight of our goals and service work.  We still have 4 months to go in this year and there is lots to be done - 4 months of fun, fellowship, fundraising and service.  Clearly The Formula is working locally and world-wide as membership continues to rise, new clubs are opened and existing clubs are strengthened.

Already I am making arrangements for the installation of officers for 2015-16 and if you have a preference, please let me know.  I have two clubs booked already and would be pleased to make arrangements as you are beginning to plan programs for late September or early October.

As you are thinking ahead to the budget for next year, please plan on the same funds to support the work of the LG [although I expect the per member allocation may be a few dollars less].  You will be voting on this at our caucus meeting September 19 and I will give you advance notice of my own budget when it gets closer.

Lots to be happy about right now - and most particularly I'm happy to be a member of Kiwanis - the largest service organization in the world devoted to children.

Yours in Kiwanis Service ~
