Chatham-Kent Aktion Club holds Christmas Party

We had a wonderful party, good attendance from both Chatham and Ridgetown Aktion Clubs.  The Golden K were represented by President Cathy, Mary Alice, Jerry, Bill, Laurraine and Rob.  Ridgetown Club were represented by Gary and June Guyitt and International Vice-President Dr. John Button and Debbie.  I have attached 2 pictures, the first of the Chatham Aktion Club presenting President Cathy and Mary Alice with $100 donation to Eliminate and the second a picture of Santa showing off the new shirts before they were presented to each Aktion Club member.  Again the Aktion Club wish to thank the Golden K for their continued support. 

 

Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Hosts Dreamhome

Members from the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K were on duty at the Bluewater Health Foundation's 18th Annual Dream Home as hosts the weekend of Dec. 8th and 9th.  This year's home is located east of Camlachie in a new subdivision called Muskoka Trail of Bonnie Doone.  The general overall impression of the home is that it is one of the better designs created during the 18 years the foundation has been building the homes.  All profits will go to the MRI Campaign at Bluewater Health.  Thank you to the following Kiwanians who participated - Sheila Donald, Margaret Bradley, Anna Bej, Allan McPhee, David Allen, Mac MacDonald, Dick Felton, Pat Scarrow and Bob Molland.

 

Div 3 LG Membership Contest Winner Presentation

On Monday, Nov. 26th, PLG Sheila Donald had the pleasure of attending the Kiwanis Club of Forest's Dinner meeting.  At the event, she presented club member Murray Finch with a 32" LCD TV as the winner of her 2011-2012 membership drive incentive contest.  Murray brought in 2 new members into the Kiwanis Club of  Forest during the administrative year and so qualified, along with 12 others from Division 3 who brought in new members into their respective clubs.  Thank you to all members who worked hard at building their clubs!

Another Walter Zeller awarded

On Monday, Nov. 12th LG Bud Orr handed out a Walter Zeller Fellowship to Forest Club Past President Martin Brunner's wife, Anne Marie.  Her donation helps protect 690 lives!  Thank you Anne Marie!

Another wonderful event also took place the same night.  LG Bud presented long time member Ernest Butt with his 50 year Legion of Honour certificate and pin.  Ernie (better known as Junior) has given tirelessly to all projects of the Forest Kiwanis Club and truly deserves this recognition.  Thank you Jr. for 50 years of service to your club and community!

Harrow Ontario Service Clubs Help Windsor Kiwanis

On Saturday, October 13th a very special event took place.  The Knights of Columbus from Harrow, Ontario, along with the Harrow Rotary Club, the Harrow Firefighters, Harrow Kinsmen, Harrow Lions, the Harrow Fairgrounds Association and many others hosted a Medieval Feast to raise funds for the Windsor Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp.  Located near Harrow, Ontario, the camp has been in operation for 65 years.  Each year between 250-300 children attend a week long camping experience by the lake.  The Windsor Kiwanis Club must raise approximately $130,000.00 each year to continue to operate the camp.   This past spring a team of volunteers lead by Arlen Mifflin, son of Past Lt. Governor Al Mifflin made much needed repairs to the camp so that it could continue to operate and provide a wonderful experience for children.  LG Bud Orr attended the Feast which raised $12,000.00 for the camp.  This is a wonderful example of Service clubs helping a service club with a valued project such as Sunshine Point Camp!

Seaway Kiwanis and the Grey Cup Visit

On November 3rd, the Grey Cup Train paid a visit to the city of Sarnia to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the legendary sports event.  Members of the Seaway Kiwanis Club took advantage of an opportunity to support this wonderful event and to raise funds.  They set up a booth to sell hot dogs and pop. 

It was a wonderful day, with over 1400 Sarnia-Lambton residents going through the train. Seaway club volunteers were Toby Bitdness, Ken Stothers, Cindy Scholten, Ralph Hare, Ken Machan, Jennifer Mcculough and friends of the Seaway Michael Hageman and Steven Brain assisting with line control and the BBQ.

Proceeds from this event will go to support the Seaway Kiwanis Animal Farm at Canatara Park.

7 Members receive Walter Zeller Fellowships

Thursday, Oct. 18
This morning's meeting of the Chatham-Kent Golden K Kiwanis club was a very special event.  7 members received their Walter Zeller Fellowship medals for their individual contributions to the ELIMINATE Project of $1250.00 or more.  EC&C ELIMINATE Coordinator Jim Garey and his wife Sue were in attendance to present the awards.  LG Bud and his wife (and brand new Kiwanis member) Jackie were also in attendance.  
PLG Jim Garey advised the group that Division 3 is leading the charge against eliminating maternal neo-natal tetanus in the remaining 31 countries where is remains a needless form of death for new born babies and mothers.  Two clubs in the division have come forward and declared that they are going to be MODEL clubs - The Chatham-Kent Golden K and the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K.  Way to go gang!!! 
Now is the time for the other clubs in Division 3 to step up to the plate and get your events planned to raise the necessary funds to ELIMINATE this disease.  Lets go team!!!

LG Bud Orr completing Club Officer Installations

LG Bud has been on the move.  He started the process of Club Officer installations on Sept. 25th and will end on Oct. 16th with the Kiwanis Club of the Seaway.  He has met many new friends along the way.  

Goals for 2012-2013

LG Bud has created the following as his goals for Division 3 for the coming year.

• To have an active interclub exchange
• To maintain active membership
• To raise money for the ELIMINATE Project
• To promote education about Kiwanis within each community
• To have FUN as Kiwanis members in Division 3 

Other exciting news is that the EC&C District will have a newsletter sent out to all clubs for distribution to the club membership.  This is being taken on by Kiwanian Randy Ross of Division 4's Ridgetown club.  All clubs are invited to submit any newsworthy story to Randy at Randy Ross  for publication.  Randy reserves the right to edit or shorten especially lengthy pieces.  He is looking for information that will be of interest to all Kiwanians in our District (as opposed to things that are of interest to only one or two clubs).  This includes innovative projects, special anniversaries, interesting events and general articles about Kiwanis.  Governor Peter Tudisco will have a column and there will also be information about things like the annual convention.  Photos are welcome/encouraged.  There will be a newsletter at least once per month, however they may be produced more frequently as needed.

LG Bud Receives Walter Zeller Fellowship Award

This was a very special occasion for LG Bud and the Kiwanis Club of Forest.  District Lead for the ELIMINATE Project Jim Garey and his wife Sue traveled to Forest to attend their Monday meeting and to present LG Bud with his Walter Zeller Fellowship medallion in honour of his commitment to the ELIMINATE Project.  To qualify for a Walter Zeller medallion a person must commit to donating $1250.00 over a two year term in support of ELIMINATE.  This level of commitment will save 690 lives.  The goal for Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District has been set a just over $4 million dollars over the course of the project which will end in 2015 at Kiwanis's 100th Anniversary celebration in Indianapolis.  ELIMINATE is a 5 year world wide service project in cooperation with UNICEF.

Passing of the LG Banner and Final Words

On Sept. 15th, Division 3 had its 4th Divisional Council meeting in Forest, Ontario at the Kineto Theatre.  22 members from around the division were in attendance.  This was LG Sheila's final meeting and LG Bud Orr's first meeting.  Kiwanis custom was followed and the LG Banner for the LG's Home Club was passed from the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia, Inc. to the Kiwanis Club of Forest.

Today I sit at my computer and reflect on the past 2 years of service that I have given to the Division.  I hope I made a bit of a difference in the way each of you sees Kiwanis.  Thanks to Kiwanis and my Division 3 family, I have been able to visit many places that I normally would not have ventured if not for attending a convention or a function related to Kiwanis.  I met a lot of new friends in the process, friends that I hope to have for a lifetime.  The knowledge that Kiwanis has given me has broadened my horizons and made me much more aware of what is going on in our world.  It has given me hope that, as Kiwanians, we are doing the right thing to help the children of the world and those that are less fortunate than ourselves.  Within each of us there is a desire to help and through our membership, we can do just that.  At times the knowledge that we gain reminds us of how life can be in other locations of the world.  Locations where children have no parents, have no home and don't know where their next meal is coming from.  If Kiwanians see a need, they rise to the occasion and help out.  We can make a difference, individually and as a group.
I wish for each of you continued success in your life of service through Kiwanis.  I am sure I will be seeing some of you in the future at an interclub or at a convention.  Keep service in your heart...........you will never go wrong.

Kiwanis/Staples BBQ a Success!

Sept. 1st and 2nd, 2012
Happy anniversary to Kiwanis and Staples on the completion of our 10th year of our joint project to help kids less fortunate get their school year off to a good start.  It is hard to believe that we have done our BBQ in front of the local Staples store for 10 years!  How time flies!  Kiwanians from the Sarnia club, Sarnia-Lambton Golden K cub and the Forest Club flipped burgers and dogs, poured drinks and had a lot of fun in the process on 2 beautiful days.  We couldn't have asked for better weather.  Total money raised was $675.00 which will go to Staples for school supplies.  
How does this project work?
Every year we select schools where we think some students could use assistance with obtaining the necessary supplies to get their year off on the right foot.  A letter is delivered to the Principal of each selected school during the last week of August.  It requests that they have their teachers assess their students during the first week of class and then formulate a "wish list" for their school.  This is then e-mailed to the Manager of the local Staples store.  The staff then get to work packing up as much of each school's wish list as possible, based on the funds received both from donations at their checkouts, from our BBQ and a donation from Seaway Kiwanis.
All the supplies are delivered to each school a week later.

Forest Kiwanis - Distinguished Club Status Achieved

It is my honour to announce that the Kiwanis Club of Forest has achieved Distinguished Club Status for the 2010-2011 administrative year under Gov. Paul Toussaint.  I had the pleasure of presenting Past President Glen Starkey and Secretary Angela Baarda with their Distinguished pins at their club BBQ hosted by Jeff and Kristie Cable.  Congratulations to them both and to the club for all of their hard work for the community of Forest and surrounding area.

DR. JOHN WINS AS VP KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL

I am so pleased to announce from New Orleans that Dr. John Button has been elected as Vice President of Kiwanis International on the first ballot!!!!  What a wonderful time for the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District of Kiwanis!  We are so proud to call the future President of Kiwanis our friend.  Pictures will follow soon so stay tuned.

Kiwanis One Day at LKCC

Kiwanis One Day - a day when all Kiwanians throughout the world join together and do service projects in their communities.  The official date for this event was Saturday, April 21st but in Canada the weather does not always cooperate with us so many clubs selected a date in May to do their work.  Members of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia and the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K got together after their meeting on Tuesday to do some "sprucing up" activities at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre.  Many hands make light work.

Leamington Kiwanis Boys and Girls Camp gets a Facelift!

The Leamington Kiwanis Boys and Girls Camp on Seacliff Drive recently received a facelift to repair the grounds, driveway and parking at the camp.
