Chatham-Kent presents Community Service Award

2013 SYD KEMSLEY COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

In 2009, Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent Golden K established the Syd Kemsley
Community Service Award which is to be presented annually to a deserving citizen selected by the club’s Board of Directors. The award was established to honour Syd’s 60+  years of membership in Kiwanis and his contribution of caring, time and energy to Kiwanis projects. Each year the selected recipient of the award will receive a special certificate and the club will donate a bed kit to Sleeping Children Around the World in the recipient’s name.

The inaugural award was presented to Kiwanian Syd Kemsley himself.  Syd joined the Kiwanis Club of Chatham in 1948 and served as Chair of the Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival in 1959 and 1960. In 1997 he transferred to the newly formed Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent Golden K as a charter member where he served as the club’s chair of the IDD Program.

The 2013 recipient of the Syd Kemsley Community Service Award is Janet Braddon.  Janet was recognized for her many years of volunteering and dedicated service to make Chatham-Kent a better place.  She is a charter member of Golden K who served  on almost every committee within the club, including two terms as President and two as Secretary.  Janet has been involved with many community groups over the years, serving as a member of the Board of St. Joseph Hospital, the Kent County District Health Council, St. Andrew’s Residence, Meals on Wheels and the Chatham Film Group.  In addition, Janet has contributed countless hours to the success of the Kiwanis Music Festival.

Janet is truly an outstanding volunteer serving the community of Chatham-Kent - and children of the world.
